Multilooking - a general question

Added by Sofia Antonova about 2 years ago

Dear all,

I'm getting confused about the term "multilooking" which is used in gamma and other software. When I read some theory on multilooking, it says about independent measurements (looks) with "sub-apertures" during the image acquisition, and then averaging across these looks to obtained a multilooked image.

This is not what we can do in the data post-processing once the data is already acquired with a single look, correct? Does it mean that in the gamma terminology the multilooking means just a spatial averaging across neighboring pixels? Or those independent looks are indeed taken and then used for multilooking?

Thank you!
Sofia

Hello,
Independent observations of a scene with speckle can be performed either in the
frequency or spatial domain.
In the gamma software, spatial sampling is used almost everywhere.

The effective number of looks will be lower than the number of spatial samples
in the average due to oversampling of the input data. The program multi-look2
allows you to differentiate between spatial averaging and decimation of the
multi-looked images.

Charles Werner
